Ten Moving Mistakes to Avoid

Moving from one house to another can be stressful and even overwhelming, but with a little preparation the process will go very smoothly. Avoid these ten moving mistakes to ensure an organized, stress-free move:

1. Not packing similar items together.

Make you life easier after the move and organize your items when packing, rather than putting things into boxes at random. An easy way to do this is to pack by room so that when you get to your new home you know exactly where to place boxes and can minimize effort in moving things around.

2. Not labeling boxes.

Organizing your boxes won’t help much if you don’t know what’s in them. Don’t forget to label all of your boxes so you know where they should go once you get to your new home.

3. Taking everything from your old home.

A move is a great time to start cleaning out some things you don’t need. When you’re packing, you are bound to find things you don’t need or haven’t used in years. Taking the time to get rid of these things will make sure your new home is much more organized.

4. Using old, beat up boxes.

Although it may be cheaper to use old boxes, they don’t hold up very well. Avoid any items breaking or being lost due to bad packaging. If you need help figuring out the best way to pack your items, contact your moving company.

5. Not planning enough time for packing.

If you wait until the last minute to start packing, you’ll just end up feeling rushed and the process will be much more difficult. Start thinking about packing about a month before your move, and give yourself enough time to properly pack up each room.

6. Not securing your items.

It is more than likely that you have at least a few things that are fragile. Make sure to pack these items securely, with a properly fitting box and air bubble cushioning material if needed.

7. Thinking you can do it all yourself.

The thought of avoiding the cost of a moving company may be pleasant at first. When the day comes, however, doing it all yourself can make your move more stressful than it needs to be. Moving without a moving company takes more time and uses more of your own fuel – and may end up not being as cheap as you thought.

8. Not getting an estimate from your movers.

If you do choose to work with a moving company, know what you’re working with. Make sure you get an estimate up front so that there are no surprises down the line.

9. Not preparing for the weather.

Although you probably have to plan your move out day far in advance, you can still prepare for bad weather. Have some tarps and plastic coverings on hand in case you need to cover boxes in between your house and the moving truck. This can help you avoid items getting soggy and even ruined from the rain.

10. Not packing a survival kit.

You don’t want to get everything to your new home only to realize your whole wardrobe is boxed up and you don’t have a change of clothes on hand for the next day. When you’re moving, you don’t need to pack absolutely everything. Keep the things you need in a small bag to bring with you to your new home. This can include toiletries, glasses, a couple changes of clothes, and other needed items.
